EAPO President Grigory Ivliev delivered a speech at the third international conference ‘IP Eurasia’. This year it is held in China and is focused on cooperation with China.

In recent years, Chinese applicants have shown a positive trend in filing applications for inventions (5% in 2023 to 2022) and industrial designs. After the US and Russia, China is one the top three most active applicants. However, the absolute figures indicate that the potential for growth is still high.

The largest number of valid patents relate to organic chemistry (25%) and medicines (8%). However, a large share of Chinese exports to Eurasian countries is machinery and equipment. Therefore, obtaining exclusive rights is a promising task for a huge number of Chinese companies.

“I am convinced that the importance of patenting in Eurasia will increase for Chinese companies. This is primarily due to the rapid growth of mutual economic exchanges between the EAPO Member States and China. At the end of 2023, the trade growth ranged from 24% to 67%. Enhancing exports to our countries is a good opportunity for China to develop its economy. Our region is a promising market for high-tech products. The states in the Eurasian region maintain strong bilateral cooperation with China in the fields of science and technology,” Ivliev said.

According to Mr. Ivliev, the importance of getting IP legal protection in the Eurasian region in the current economic environment is determined by supply logistics from China. The EAPO is open to dialogue and is interested in developing cooperation with China.

The conference was held both offline and online to provide an opportunity to include Chinese specialists from the regions. The number of reviews has exceeded 2 thousand.
