On September 9, 1994, at a meeting of the Council of Heads of Government of the Commonwealth of Independent States, the Eurasian Patent Convention (EAPC) was signed. This date actually became the founding day of the Eurasian Patent Organization (EAPO).

The leaders and examiners of national IP offices who were at the origins of the EAPO establishment understood the importance of creating a united organization that would help to preserve the common patent space. This approach allowed to maintain the basis for scientific, technological and economic partnership and innovative cooperation between the countries of the region.

This approach allowed to maintain the basis for scientific, technological and economic partnership and innovative cooperation between the countries of the region.

Alexander Grigoriev, President of the Eurasian Patent Office from 2004 to 2016, one of the EAPO founders, on the eve of the celebration, emphasized the fundamental nature of the instrument adopted in 1994: “The Eurasian Patent Convention, due to its framing nature, is a very stable legal structure. Over all the years of its operation, it has never been necessary to make any addenda or amendments requiring its revision”.

Based on the EAPC, the regional regulatory system is constantly improved and updated, including the adoption of the Protocol on the Protection of Industrial Designs. Since the signing of the Convention, more than 40,000 Eurasian patents for inventions have been granted to users from more than 130 countries.

Among the future priorities of the Organization, President of the Eurasian Patent Office Grigory Ivliev highlights the expansion of the number of regional intellectual property subject matters, primarily the creation of a Eurasian trademark and the formation of a Eurasian jurisdiction in IP in order to enhance the effectiveness of dispute resolution.

The digitalization of the EAPO activities, the widespread use of artificial intelligence, the territorial expansion of the EAPO, the increase of educational programs in IP and advanced training programs for examiners from the national IP offices of the EAPO member states remain on the agenda.

All these measures would help to solve the main task – to build a common Eurasian patent and information space, which would allow all EAPO members to fully realize their own scientific and technological potential in the economy and social sphere for the benefit of all Eurasian states.
