The Eurasian Patent Office (EAPO) participated in the 9th BRICS IP Forum, which was held on October 30 and 31, in Paris, France.

The Forum co-organizers were leading legal firms of BRICS, which comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. The Russian Federation was represented by Gorodissky and Partners, the biggest law firm in the Russian IP market.

Practicing lawyers and patent attorneys discussed the current trends in the development of legislation and jurisprudence in the field of intellectual property in the BRICS countries, discussed the extension of patent protection and compulsory licensing, examined the experience of creating technological clusters, free economic zones, adoption of other measures to stimulate the use of intellectual property and foreign investment in emerging markets.

In his speech the EAPO representative spoke about the advantages of the regional patenting system for ensuring investment protection related to the Eurasian region, the current trends in the development of the Eurasian Patent Organization and the main activities of the Eurasian Patent Office. Exchange of views on IP rights enforcement practices in the BRICS countries, discussions on certain aspects of substantial examination of the Eurasian application and the enforcement of the Eurasian patent after grant were discussed in the course of the conference.

      

Being created as a result of international cooperation of law firms from the BRICS countries, the BRICS IP Forum aims to provide up-to-date information on the protection and enforcement of intellectual property rights in the BRICS member states to industry specialists, intellectual property specialists, and potential investors interested in the establishment of business in the BRICS countries. The participation of EAPO in BRICS activities is one of the areas of cooperation with intellectual property offices of the BRICS countries and the activities of EAPO in promoting the Eurasian patent system.
